How to Measure Your Room for Flooring
Thinking of giving your floors a fresh new look? Whether you’re choosing vinyl flooring, laminate flooring or carpeting, the first step is knowing how much flooring you need.
Measuring your room is easier than you think! Follow our simple guide to get started.
1. What You Will Need
Before you begin, make sure you have:
- A measuring tape
- A pen and paper
- A calculator
2. Measure the Room
Start by measuring the length and width of your room.
- Measure from one wall to the opposite wall (length).
- Measure from the other two walls (width).
- Write down both measurements.
Always measure in metres (m).
3. Calculate How Much Flooring You Need
Once you have your measurements, multiply the length by the width.
Length × Width = Total Square Metres (m²)
Example:
If your room measures:
- Length: 5 metres
- Width: 4 metres
Calculation:
5 × 4 = 20 m²
You will need 20 square metres of flooring to cover the room.
4. What If Your Room Has an Odd Shape?
If your room has corners, an L-shape or an extra section, don’t worry!
Simply divide the room into smaller rectangles.
Measure each section separately, calculate the square metres and add them together.
This will give you the total floor area.
5. Remember to Allow Extra Flooring
It is always a good idea to order a little extra flooring to allow for cutting and fitting.
As a general guide:
- Add 5–10% extra for a simple room.
- Add 10–15% extra for rooms with unusual shapes or lots of corners.
For example, if your room measures 20 m², allowing 10% extra means ordering approximately 22 m².
6. A Few Helpful Tips
- Measure each room separately.
- Double-check your measurements before ordering.
- Remember to include areas such as small corners and extensions.
- Check how much flooring is included in each pack.
- Ask your flooring supplier if you’re unsure how much extra to allow.
